Fresh water
Clean water removes about seventy per cent of the disease in a village — and gives girls back the morning they spent walking to fetch it.
According to the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme, 2.1 billion people worldwide have no safe drinking water readily available at home, 2.4 billion do not use improved sanitation, and 663 million in developing countries have no access to an improved water source. For children under five, water- and sanitation-related disease is a leading cause of death: over eight hundred children die every day from preventable illness caused by poor water, sanitation and hygiene.
The government of Ghana works with UNICEF Ghana on this, but poor sanitation keeps spreading because neither can reach every rural community.
What a gift actually buys
A scientific geological survey to find the best underground site. The drilling rig and the crew — a well usually runs more than two hundred feet down. Hygiene education for the community. Training for the villagers who will maintain the well. And periodic workshops for the financial committee the community sets up to manage it.
Year to date, Meaningful Life International has organised the resources to drill thirty boreholes, serving thousands of families in the remotest villages.
